UVic Recognized As One Of The World's Top Universities
The University of Victoria is among the top one per cent of universities in the world and is the top-ranked university in Canada without a medical school in the Times Higher Education’s annual World University Rankings. UVic is among eight Canadian universities in the top 200, ranking 196th worldwide.
“Being recognized as one of the top 200 universities in the world for the third consecutive year is terrific news that we can share with pride throughout the campus and the wider community as we celebrate our 50th anniversary,” says Carmen Charette, vice president of external relations. “By including UVic in this top tier of institutions, THE has recognized UVic’s commitment to excellence in areas such as the learning environment for students, quality of research and international outlook.”
To develop the rankings, THE considers 13 performance indicators in five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); industry income (innovation) and international outlook (staff, students and research). Teaching, research and citations are each worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score.
Earlier this year, Times Higher Education ranked UVic 11th in the world and first in Canada among universities under 50 years of age in its “100-under-50” rankings.
Included among the measures are a reputation survey of over 16,000 academics; institutional, industry and faculty research income; and an analysis of 50 million scholarly citations to determine the average number of citations per scholarly paper, a measure of research impact.
THE has published the rankings since 2004 and describes them as the most comprehensive global measurements of their kind. The rankings are regularly used by students to select schools, by academics to make career decisions, and by university managers to benchmark their performance. People using the THE tables online are able to customize the information to compare institutions according to different attributes.
This year’s rankings were released on Oct. 3.
