Unique Program For Parents Demystifies New University Student Experience

New university students are not the only people adjusting to unfamiliar experiences at the start of term. For parents, it's a period of transition as well. As part of this year's Parent Orientation Program, UVic counsellor Janet Sheppard will share some valuable insights with the parents of new university students. Sheppard brings considerable experience to the program as the university's former Orientation Director and Peer Helping Coordinator.
"Parents are not always sure what to expect. Should they worry if they haven't seen or heard from their daughter or son for three weeks? What's normal? What about exams, stress, and making new friends? Will they be safe? I'll try and help parents understand what it is like to be a student starting university in 2000," says Sheppard.
Parents who want to attend this session should ask their daughter or son to register them when students sign up for the new student orientation program.
Distribution of orientation registration packages to new UVic students begins July 5, 2000. Students can also register for the program on-line at: www.coun.uvic.ca/orient/
