Victoria Mobbed by Young Talent

More than 600 dancers, musicians, and actors from around the province will be strutting their stuff in Victoria June 24-29 as B.C.’s largest youth festival finds a new home at UVic.

The Provincials is staged by Performing Arts B.C., formerly known as the British Columbia Association of Performing Arts Festivals. At a celebration at UVic today PABC commemorated its 40th anniversary and revealed its name change, a new visual identity and a new host venue.

The Provincials is the culmination of performing arts festivals in 34 communities around the province. This year, the best of the 80,000 youths who have participated at the regional level will showcase their achievements in music, dance and the speech arts at UVic. The new venue means that for the first time ever, participants will be sharing performance space and accommodation throughout the festival. In addition to providing performers with networking opportunities, the UVic venue will allow the young people and their families to save money on transportation, accommodation and food.

“I can’t think of a better home for The Provincials than our provincial capital,” says PABC President Wendy Vernon, “and we’re are very excited that the faculty of fine arts at the University of Victoria has agreed to host this year’s festival.”

“We see this as a natural fit,” says UVic’s dean of the faculty of fine arts, Dr. Giles Hogya, whose faculty is sponsoring the festival and helping PABC access state-of-the-art performance venues at discounted rates. “My faculty has a long tradition of developing tomorrow’s talents. We are committed to excellence and this event celebrates achievement.”

During the festival, participants aged 10-29 will take part in skills workshops and adjudicated showcases specific to their performance genre. Each evening those who have excelled during the day’s competitions will perform at the University Centre Auditorium and the McPherson Playhouse. The Provincials will be launched at 8 p.m. on June 24 at University Centre with a gala hosted by Pacific Opera’s artistic director, Timothy Vernon, and featuring performances by special guests including vocalist Barbara Livingston.
