Global Experts Heal Mother Nature

Eight hundred ecological restoration experts from around the world will converge on UVic August 24 to 26 for the World Conference on Ecological Restoration.

The theme of the Society of Ecological Restoration International’s (SERI) 16th annual conference is “Restoration on the Edge”— restoration of species and ecosystems at the edge of extinction or restoration on the edge between nature and culture. The conference is sponsored in part by UVic’s division of continuing studies, school of environmental studies and restoration of natural systems program, as well as SERI and the Canadian Land Reclamation Association.

Keynote speaker Maurice Strong—organizer of the historic Rio Earth Summit and advisor to the UN—will speak on environmental reconstruction and sustainable rehabilitation. His talk is on August 24 at 8:00 p.m. in the University Centre auditorium, and is free and open to the public.

“We are bringing together people from many walks of life and many different types of experience and expertise,” says Dr. Don Eastman, SERI B.C. chapter president and UVic restoration of natural systems program professor. “At our meeting, we hope to support and encourage ways for these people to deal with problems caused by living unsustainably on the planet, and to re-connect people with the ecosystems that support them.”

The conference will include papers, symposia and plenary talks on many subjects, including climate change, urban restoration, invasive plants, endangered species, and traditional ecological knowledge. As well, from August 16 to 20, UVic is offering the public a one week course in the restoration of marine aquatic ecosystems, taught by UVic adjunct biology professor Dr. John Volpe.
