UVic Fall Convocation - November 10, 12

—Author, children’s performer and education advocate
to get honorary degrees—

The University of Victoria’s fall convocation ceremonies on Nov. 10 and 12 will include honorary degrees for author and retired UVic writing professor Jack Hodgins, children’s performer Raffi Cavoukian, and Robert Giroux, a leading advocate of higher education and research in Canada.

More than 1,200 UVic students will celebrate the completion of their degrees, diplomas or certificates during fall convocation’s three ceremonies.

Hodgins will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree for his works of fiction—mostly based on Vancouver Island—and his non-fiction, including a popular handbook for writers, A Passion for Narrative, which includes many of the teaching strategies he used at UVic between 1985 and 2002. Hodgins won the 1980 Governor General’s Award for Literature for his novel, The Resurrection of Joseph Bourne.

Raffi’s honorary music degree recognizes a 25-year career that spans singing, teaching and public service—all dedicated to children’s entertainment and education. He has sold more than 12 million copies of his recordings, making him one of the best selling children’s singers of all time. Through his Troubadour Foundation he has supported the UVic faculty of education’s international arts project.

Giroux is the former president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. From 1995 to 2004, he played a significant role in showing the importance of university research in relation to national goals for innovation and development. He has also been a force behind the creation of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Canada Research Chairs—two key university research funding programs.
