UVic Plant Sale Set For Mother's Day

McKinnon Gym becomes a giant, one-day plant centre

Every month of May there are sure signs of spring in UVic’s McKinnon Gym: basketball season is over, the student exam desks are cleared away, and UVic Plant Sale volunteers assemble tables packed full of annuals, perennials, native plants—almost anything for a beautiful garden.

This year’s sale–huge by any standard—is on Mother’s Day, May 8 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Proceeds from the sale support additions and improvements to the UVic Finnerty Gardens, on the southwest corner of campus.

The popular annual sale is organized by more than 100 community volunteers.

Finnerty Gardens are open year-round, there is no admission, and they include an astounding array of rhododendrons—some 500 varieties in all. But there’s more to the gardens than the rhodo collection. Visitors also enjoy a whole range of plants, trees and shrubs alongside walking paths that wind through the 2.6-hectare site.

Plant sale shoppers are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection and it’s a good idea to bring something in which to pack your new additions home. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

The sale is normally held on the first Sunday of May but has been scheduled a week later this year because of the American Rhododendron Convention, April 27 to May 1 in Victoria.
