$500,000 provided for UVic conservation professorship

Dr. McTaggart-CowanDr. McTaggart-Cowan The provincial government is providing $500,000 as a major contribution toward a fundraising campaign to honour one of Canada's pre-eminent wildlife scientists with a professorship in his name at the University of Victoria.

Ida Chong, Minister of Advanced Education and MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, today announced the province's donation to the Dr. Ian McTaggart-Cowan Professorship in Biodiversity Conservation and Ecological Restoration.

"This funding will help to create a legacy to the work of Dr. McTaggart-Cowan, a nationally recognized pioneer in the areas of conservation, restoration and wildlife management," Chong said. "For over 70 years, Dr. McTaggart Cowan has been a tireless advocate for the protection and enhancement of habitat and wildlife in British Columbia. His work has laid the foundation for research in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration research, an area in which UVic is a leader."
