Nurse Educators Present Latest Research at National Conference

Nursing ethics, support for caregivers of elderly people, and improving the quality of nurses’ workplaces will all be part of the discussion at an upcoming national nursing research conference in Victoria.

More than 200 students, faculty and presenters from Canada’s nursing schools are expected to attend “Research in a Changing Landscape” at the Victoria Conference Centre from November 15 to 18. Hosted by the University of Victoria’s School of Nursing and the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, the conference will examine how nursing research can promote effective health care delivery in today’s demanding environment.

“Nurses are on the front lines everyday delivering health care services that are currently stretched to the limit,” says Dr. Mary Ellen Purkis, Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development. “Our ability to advance nursing practice is essential to the future of our health care system. This conference will explore leading-edge research in vital areas such as diverse populations, professional practice and policy and ethics.”

UVic presenters at the conference include: Dr. Jane Milliken on supporting caregivers of elderly people with mental health and addiction problems; and Dr. Jan Storch, Kara Schick Makaroff and Lorelei Newton on results from their three-year research into leadership leading to ethical nursing policy and practice.

The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing is the national voice for nursing education and nursing research and represents nursing programs throughout Canada. The association, representing all Canadian universities and colleges offering nursing education, establishes and promotes national standards of excellence for nursing education and advancement of nursing knowledge.
