Black Press Establishes Business Scholarship

David Black, president and owner of Black Press—Canada’s largest independent newspaper company—is establishing a new scholarship for students entering the University of Victoria’s Bachelor of Commerce program.

Each year, 37 students throughout BC entering UVic’s Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) program will each receive a $5,000 scholarship from the initiative.

“This is a wonderful initiative and we are very grateful to David Black,” says UVic President David Turpin. “Student financial assistance is a priority for us and David Black is playing a leadership role by creating scholarships that will give students from across the province access to a UVic business education.”

Awards will be based on academic excellence; applicants must also submit a personal essay commenting on their life goals, their understanding of ethical behaviour, and their involvement in community or campus organizations. A letter of recommendation is also required.

“We are delighted with this funding,” says Dr. Ali Dastmalchian, dean of UVic Business. “David Black was instrumental in developing the business school in 1990 and he continues to invest in our students and the economic potential of British Columbia.”

The Black Press Business Scholarship deadline for this year is June 30. Since applicants must be admitted to UVic’s BCom program to qualify, current high school students must also apply to the BCom program by no later than June 30.

UVic Business delivers a unique Bachelor of Commerce program. Students spend their last two years fully immersed in the business faculty where they can specialize or customize a program that suits their needs. Every student has the opportunity to participate in an international experience, is required to take at least two paid co-operative work terms and to study sustainable business practices. Complete application details are available at www.business.uvic.ca/blackpress.
