UVic Hosts Deaf Awareness Activities Sept. 22-26

Learn how to express yourself without saying a word. A chance to learn American Sign Language (ASL) is just one of the opportunities being offered when the UVic Resource Centre for Students with a Disability (RCSD) celebrates International Deaf Awareness Week with a variety of fun, free and informative events and activities on campus during the week of Sept. 22 to 26.

Along with ASL classes, the week will feature lectures and screenings of the films Through Deaf Eyes and Love is Never Silent. The panel discussion, “Deafness 101 – Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Too Afraid to Ask” will offer an opportunity to learn from Deaf UVic students. Displays will also be set up in the lobby of the University Centre Monday, Sept. 22. All events are open to the public.

“Deaf Awareness Week promotes a friendly, open environment where Deaf and Hearing students can learn about each other’s communities,” said fourth year child and youth care student Sheila Tolentino.

This is the second year that UVic has organized Deaf awareness activities. “Since Deaf Awareness Week last year, the campus has become a more Deaf-friendly environment for us because individuals are more aware of our access needs and are not afraid to approach us,” said child and youth care master’s student, Melissa Campbell.
