Math Anxiety? We've Got An App For That!

Math-challenged kids and their parents can look forward to going back to school this year thanks to a series of free apps developed by two UVic mathematics teacher educators. Drs. Tim and Leslee Francis Pelton have published six different MathTappers apps on the iTunes store that teach and reinforce basic math skills through interactive, easy-to-play games. In the crowded world of math apps, MathTappers stands out.
“Few of the other apps employ visual models that support a basic comprehension of math,” says Leslee Francis Pelton. “Our apps emphasize the understanding of mathematics with simple, bright graphics that engage users and then challenge them to do quicker calculations.”
While most of the MathTappers apps deal with basic math skills (adding, multiplication, fractions) one, Carbon Choices, gives users the tools to calculate their own carbon footprint. The Peltons and their collaborators are currently developing several other math apps. You can find the free apps on iTunes by searching for “MathTappers” or visit www.MathTappers.com for more information.
