Dr. Smith has a broad interest in understanding health and illness in relation to their social, cultural, and institutional contexts. In particular, his research has focused on three main areas: the social organization of diagnostics in dementia assessment and the impact of diagnostic disclosure on interfamilial and intergenerational dynamics; the effects of regulatory environments and institutional cultures on patterns of health care delivery; and the applications of qualitative methodologies to study the social determinants of health and illness.
