Research Description

My research involves the theory and applications of capture-recapture studies.

Interdisciplinary Research

Capture-recapture is interdisciplinary by nature as it is primarily used in biology and fishery studies, however it also has applications in epidemiology.

I also collaborate with other scientists (ecologists, fisheries scientists, and astrophysicists) in general to work on various scientific studies.

Health Related Research

Estimating the number of injection drug user's in Victoria will help the Vancouver Island Health Authority know how big a problem they are dealing with. Injection drug use is coupled with both HIV and Hepatitic C transmission. Estimating both the disease transmission rates and the number of injection drug user's will aid mathematical modelers to determine possible outlooks for Victoria.

I am discussing potential research collaborations with the Vancouver Health Authority that will estimate the number of injection drug users' in Victoria.

Community Collaborations

I am collaborating with AIDS Vancouver Island who run the Victoria needle exchange to estimate the number of injection drug user's using the needle exchange and to estimate the length of time they spend in the system.

I am also collaborating with the Laskeek Bay Conservation Society working on a project to estimate the number of breeding and non-breeding Ancient Murrelets on Limestone Island, Haida Gwaii via a long term capture-recapture study.

International Involvement

International Research

Dr Eric Roth and I are discussing possible capture-recapture projects that will estimate the number of child sex-works in Athi River, Kenya. We are also interested in estimating the number of clients of both child and female sex workers in Athi River.

I develop software for capture-recapture models.
