Campus construction advisory

Construction and tree removal at University Centre

In order to repair storm drains and sewer pipes, two non-native trees will be removed and excavation will take place in front of the University Centre adjacent to the entrance driveway. The broken pipes have recently caused flooding in the building.

The work is scheduled to take place from approximately Oct. 29 to November 2. Please use caution in the area.

Following UVic's sustainability standards, three new trees will be planted on campus for each tree removed.

Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities

To prepare for construction of the new Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities on parking lot 3, S Hut is being deconstructed in October 2012. Utility services are also being installed near artificial turf field 2B. Saanich Council approved the revised development variance permit application and deconstruction of S Hut on Sept. 17, allowing the university to proceed with construction of the new facility and parkade.

Please use caution in the area. To ensure public safety, there may be temporary closures of short sections of the Alumni Chip Trail near parking lot 3 and McKenzie Avenue. Please follow signed detour routes and watch for equipment working.

With the removal of S Hut, three portable toilets have been installed between artificial turf playing fields F1 and F2 for the convenience of field users.

S-Hut is a Second World War-era building that is at the end of its life cycle and, due to physical deterioration, no longer provides suitable space for university use. The University of Victoria is committed to sustainability; construction waste and building materials are recycled or reused wherever possible.

Construction of the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities is expected to begin in early January. For updates, visit www.uvic.ca/carsa.
